The clear aligner therapy process

But how do clear aligners work? The treatment involves the following four easy steps.
- Consultation: We’ll meet and discuss your current concerns and future expectations of your smile. We’ll also examine your oral health to ensure issues like tooth decay and gum disease are treated first before proceeding with treatment. Additionally, the dentist will examine your bite and teeth to determine your suitability for clear aligners. Although clear orthodontics are effective, they aren’t ideal for everyone. We can only determine your eligibility after a complete oral exam.
- Digital impressions: We’ll use a digital scanner to take impressions of your teeth. Digital scanning creates a 3D model of your smile within minutes to create a personalized treatment plan. With sophisticated technology, we’ll simulate your smile to determine how and when each tooth moves. When satisfied with the results, we’ll send your digital records to a dental lab to create your bespoke aligners.
- The magic begins: We’ll give you a set of aligners to be worn incrementally to straighten your teeth. Every two weeks, you’ll switch from your current set of aligners to the next in line. Gradually, your clear aligners will perfect your smile within 9-18 months or fewer for mild cases. While clear aligners are removable, we’ll instruct you to put them on for at least 20-22 hours daily. You should remove your aligners when brushing and flossing. Also, don’t eat or drink anything except water when wearing aligners.

Ryan Simarro, DMD
Dr. Ryan Simarro was raised in Antioch, California. After graduating from Deer Valley High School, he attended the University of California Santa Barbara, where he earned a degree in cell and developmental biology. Following his graduation, Dr. Simarro attended dental school at Western University of Health Science in Pomona, California, graduating with his DMD as part of the inaugural class. He immediately began practicing dentistry in his hometown of Antioch, partnering with Dr. Mark Miller.
Dr. Simarro is a member of the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association®, the Contra Costa Dental Society and the Seattle Study Club®.
Nathan J. Simarro, DDS
With a B.S. in zoology from the University of California Santa Barbara, Dr. Nathan Simarro studied Spanish language and culture at the Universidad de Alcala de Henares in Madrid, Spain. He received his DDS and completed additional training in Implant Dentistry at the USC School of Dentistry and has worked in the dental field since 2005.
A member of the California Dental Association, ADA, and Contra Costa County Dental Society, he has experience in endodontics, implant dentistry and treating pediatric patients. A recipient of the 2014 USC Mobile Clinic Award and J.A. Slaughter Memorial Scholarship Award, he remains active in international outreach programs with underserved communities around the world.
