Bone grafting is necessary to replenish the density and volume of your jawbone caused by the following factors:
Bone grafting may be necessary as a pre-prosthetic procedure to prepare for restoring your smile with implants or dentures. Bone grafting replenishes lost bone tissue to strengthen your lower or upper arch. Ultimately, bone grafting stabilizes the bone to create a solid foundation for dentures or dental implants to be placed.
Scary as it may sound, bone grafting is a painless procedure routinely administered in our office. The process starts with a comprehensive dental exam to determine the depleted areas of the jawbone. If you have missed your tooth for over a year or had advanced gum disease, you may be a good candidate for bone grafting.
Bone grafting involves taking a bone graft from the body (autogenous graft), animals (xenograft), or human donors (allograft). In some cases, synthetic materials can be used (alloplastic graft). Each bone graft has its pros and will be recommended based on your unique needs.
Once we determine the type of bone graft needed, the doctor will prepare the treatment area by making a small incision on the gums and then stitching the bone graft in place. The bone graft will fuse over the next few months with your jawbone, forming a solid structure.
Bone grafting can help repair your damage and strengthen your jawbone again. This dental procedure offers the following benefits.
