Visiting your dentist regularly for routine dental care is essential, but what you do between those visits plays a huge role in keeping your smile strong and healthy. At Simarro Brothers Dental Care in Antioch, California, Drs. Ryan and Nathan Simarro often hear patients ask how to improve or maintain their oral health at home. Good news! Small daily habits make a big difference!
Here are the most common questions patients ask about keeping their teeth and gums in top shape between routine dental visits.
For the best results, brush at least twice a day (ideally after every meal). Use a toothbrush with soft bristles in combination with fluoride toothpaste, brushing for a full two minutes each time. Don’t forget to floss once daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, which your toothbrush can’t reach. This simple routine helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
Mouthwash can be a helpful addition to your routine, but it’s not a replacement for brushing and flossing. While it can freshen your breath, reduce plaque buildup, and help prevent cavities, it needs to be part of a complete oral hygiene regimen. We recommend choosing a mouthwash that addresses your specific needs, whether it’s cavity prevention, gum health, or sensitivity relief. For best results, use it after brushing and flossing.
Sugary snacks and drinks, sticky candies, and acidic beverages like soda and sports drinks are tough on your teeth. They feed harmful bacteria and contribute to enamel erosion, cavities, and gum inflammation. Limit these foods and instead focus on tooth-friendly options like fruits, vegetables, dairy, and plenty of water. When you indulge, rinse your mouth with water afterward to help reduce acid buildup.
Yes! While twice-a-year dental visits are typical, don’t wait if you notice signs of a problem. Red, swollen, or bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity, persistent bad breath, or sudden tooth pain are all reasons to call us right away. Catching issues early often means simpler and more affordable treatments — and you’ll feel better faster.
Great question! Healthy habits start at home. Encourage family brushing and flossing routines, make dental care fun for kids with colorful toothbrushes or reward charts, and lead by example. We recommend the whole family stick to regular cleanings and exams to keep smiles on track. Ask our team for extra tips on family-friendly dental care during your next visit!
