In most cases, Dr. Nathan Simarro, your Antioch, California dentist, will attempt to repair and restore a decayed or damaged tooth to maintain your smile. However, there are instances where issues arise that necessitate extraction to maintain your oral health. You can turn to Simarro Brothers Dental Care for competent tooth extraction services at those times. These FAQs explain more about tooth extraction procedures and why they may be needed.
Dr. Simarro may recommend extracting a tooth with severe damage due to an infection, decay, dental trauma, or gum disease. Tooth infections tend to spread quickly, which could put healthy teeth at risk. Extracting the tooth will halt the infection and safeguard your oral health. A tooth that’s suffered extensive bone loss due to gum disease may need to be removed. In some cases, a tooth may sustain irreparable damage from an accident, requiring extraction. Impacted wisdom teeth and overcrowding are two other reasons for extraction.
We can numb your mouth for this procedure to avert painful extraction. We can also provide a mild sedative to calm your nerves if needed so you can have a stress-free procedure.
There are two main types of extraction: simple and surgical. If your tooth has broken through the gum line and is accessible, Dr. Simarro will use forceps to pull it loose. An impacted or deeply fractured tooth may need surgical extraction. We’ll make a small incision in your gum to reach the tooth, remove any bone tissue in the way, and pull your tooth loose. If it’s easier, we’ll break your tooth first and remove it in pieces. Then, we’ll suture your gum so it can heal.
Once the anesthesia wears off, you may feel pain or inflammation at the extraction site. This is normal. OTC medication, warm salt water rinses, and cold compresses on your face around the extraction site can help relieve these symptoms. We recommend you rest as much as possible until you feel better. If you choose to eat, choose soft foods and refrain from using a straw for beverages. You’ll notice a blood clot forming at the extraction site. Be careful not to dislodge it, as it helps with healing and prevents a painful condition called dry socket. If you have problems with your recovery, remember that Dr. Simarro and our team are only a phone call away!
Other than wisdom teeth, replacing a lost tooth is always a good idea as it causes an unsightly gap in your smile. A dental implant, a partial denture, or a fixed dental bridge is some restorative options to consider when replacing a lost tooth.
